Empowering more surgeons and patients to benefit from robotic surgery
Dexter, by Distalmotion, redefines robotic-assisted surgery through a seamless blend of human-centered design and technological innovation.
Over the past years Distalmotion's R&D team, together with Fjaryl's designers and researchers have defined, designed and developed Dexter
What we did:
Introduced a split patient and surgeon console system architecture
Iterative ergonomics, usability and workflow definition and optimization sessions with Health Care Professionals
Design of full suite of sterile drapes and breach mitigation
Aesthetic expression and physical brand identity
CAD definition of all external surfaces
Design of physical HMI and product graphics
High end product renderings and animations for investment rounds and marketing

Translating tacit expert knowledge
We engaged some of the world’s most renowned surgeons during the design process. Over the course of collaboration, we set up several workshops with key opinion leader surgeons to co-create and inform key engineering and design decisions.
200+ grip prototypes explored to define superior precision, comfort, control and ergonomics of grips
To optimize for surgeons' demanding expectations for performing advanced and delicate movements. Fjaryl's designers also co-invented the interface between the autoclavable and undraped sterile grips and the draped surgeon console.
Our agile way of working and ability to rapidly prototype in full scale with an iterative mindset helped minimize risk and significantly shortened development time. Our team infused end-user driven innovation processes continuously enabling better decision-making for both Distalmotion and their broad group of contracted engineering houses.
Dexter’s compact, mobile footprint integrates easily into existing ORs, requiring no structural changes, and can be maneuvered effortlessly to fit any workflow.
